- Two events are complementary if exactly one of them must occur.
- The probabilities of complementary events sum to 1.
- The complement of event E is denoted E'. It is the event when E fails to occur.
For any event E with complementary event E',
P(E) + P(E') = 1 or P(E') = 1 - P(E).
