Description
Le groupe fut formé en 1982 par Robert "Bobby" Gillespie et Jim Beattie, deux lycéens de la banlieue de Glasgow. Alan McGee, plus tard fondateur du mythique label indépendant Creation Records, était un camarade de Gillespie qu'il avait initié à la musique punk.
Les premières années du groupe consistèrent essentiellement en concerts dans des petites salles de Glasgow, car Gillespie était alors également batteur de The Jesus and Mary Chain, groupe qu'il quitte finalement en 1985.
