Preparations underway for massive demonstration

Daybreak in Bangkok and protesters are settling in for a day of speeches and solidarity.

Massive anti-government demonstrations earlier this month forced Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to call for snap elections in February of 2014.

Opposition organizers say they want the elections delayed until reforms are implemented.

Protesters hope to eradicate the influence of former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, Yingluck's older brother, who is seen as the power behind her government.

And as Thaksin still enjoys much popularity amongst the rural poor, protesters say early elections would yield similar results.

(SOUNDBITE) (Thai) 53-YEAR OLD PROTESTER FROM CHACHOENGSAO PROVINCE, PRANEE KOSRI SAYING:

"We all know that if we go to vote, we will still have all of these evils (in the parliament)."

The main opposition demonstration is set for Sunday when thousands are expected to gather.
