Description

At first sight this song seems an anachronism, but it was composed in 1920. To my knowledge it was recorded only twice, in 1921. This version is by the Premier Quartet on Edison (aka American Quartet when recording for Victor). The quartet, formed in 1909, originally consisted of John Bieling, 1st tenor, Billy Murray, 2nd tenor, Steve Porter, baritone, William F. Hooley, bass. A few other groups were also called American Quartet. The makeup of the Premier/American Quartet changed several times. Robert D. Amour replaced Bieling in late 1913. John Young replaced Amour in mid-1915. Donald Chalmers replaced Hooley in mid-1918. In mid-1920 Billy Murray signed a contract with Victor. The American Quartet then consisted of Billy Murray, tenor, Albert Campbell, tenor, John H. Meyer, baritone, Frank Croxton, bass; Edison therefore formed a new Premier Quartet (Charles Hart, 1st tenor, Billy Jones, 2nd tenor, Steve Porter, baritone and Harry J. Donaghy, bass. The latter is performing here.
