Powerful storm hits Australia

A strong summer storm has struck eastern Australia, killing one person.

Large hailstones fell causing damage to properties and the downpour of rain caused the drains to overflow causing minor flooding.

A 65-year-old golfer was killed when he was struck by lightning. His two companions also suffered serious injuries on a course at Hawks Nest north of Sydney.

The wild weather also forced the evacuation of 700 people from the Penrith Leagues Club, in Sydney.

The storm passed quickly but was intense, darkening skies in the city enough that street lights came on.

Thunderstorms are relatively common during early summer, which starts in December.
