Polls open in Thailand

Most polling stations open across Thailand Sunday as controversial parliamentary elections get underway.

Months of sometimes violent anti-government demonstrations to force Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down or at least delay the vote have been unsuccessful.

Yingluck was amongst the first to cast her ballot at a polling station in Bangkok but was cautious about predicting an outcome.

I can't say anything this morning, she said. We need to wait and see.

As opposition candidates have boycotted the election- Yingluck and her party are running virtually unopposed.

Even after the results are tallied, Yingluck could find herself exposed to legal attacks and unable to pass bills and budgetary measures.

At least one polling station was closed due to protesters.

About 300 demonstrators camped outside the Laksi district office which prompted election commission officials to close it down over fears of possible violence.
