Police and protesters continue to clash in Athens
Description
(ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION)
STORY: Clashes in the streets of Athens between hooded youths and riot police continued into the night on Thursday, even reaching the interior of a subway station.
The street battles erupted during an annual demonstration in honor of the 38th anniversary of a student uprising at the Athens Polytechnic University in 1973. The march often becomes a focal point for anti-government protesters.
Hooded youths set rubbish bins alight and hurled sticks and stones at police officers who retaliated with tear gas. Police fired tear gas at protesters as they tried to quell the demonstration. Dozens of people were detained during the violence.
More than 7,000 police had bee deployed on the streets of Athens for the march.
The new coalition government of Lucas Papademos, which was sworn in on Friday and won a confidence vote on Wednesday has been widely welcomed by the public; but Greeks fear further measures in addition to wage, pension, and job cuts as well as increased taxes already introduced since 2010.
