May 31 - June 2, 2012
New York
In Please wait..., Philippe Safire has created a series of colored pixels depicting images from the natural world, such as the sea, a mountain's peak, pebbles and water. The artist defines Nature in blue, green and white. After a few moments, the bright images of Nature consume themselves and are replaced by videos of highway traffic—a symbol of human activity—and city darkness.
Please wait... belongs to an entire series, in which the artist was inspired by icons from digital software such as the loading bar or the mouse cursor. He appropriates many of these icons in his work. The title of the work is intended to be both ironic and provocative. The phrase, adapted from the computer's message to users as it loads content, alludes to society's impatience and the inevitable deterioration of our world through the consumerist lifestyle.
