Description
🌿 1. Basic Structure of a Planted Aquarium
Component Description
Glass Tank Usually made of clear glass (regular or ultra-clear). Common sizes: 60x30x36cm, 90x45x45cm, 120x50x50cm…
Aquarium Substrate Includes base soil (ADA, Gex, Oliver Knott…), top gravel, and nutrient-rich substrate. Supports plant roots and provides nutrients.
Aquatic Plants Various types: foreground (dwarf hairgrass, Monte Carlo), midground (Anubias, Java fern), background (Ludwigia, Rotala…).
Filter External or hang-on filters to keep water clean and maintain beneficial bacteria (brands: Sunsun, Eheim, Atman…).
CO₂ System Pressurized CO₂ enhances plant growth and coloration (includes CO₂ tank, solenoid valve, diffuser…).
Aquarium Light Provides photosynthesis light for plants (LED RGB or white – brands: Chihiros, WRGB, Odyssea…).
Fish & Invertebrates Fish (neon tetras, rasboras, glass fish), shrimp (red cherry, rili), snails, algae eaters (Otocinclus, Siamese algae eaters…).
🛠️ 2. Basic Steps to Set Up a Planted Aquarium
Design the layout: nature style, forest, mountain, bonsai, iwagumi (stone-based), Dutch style (plant-focused)…
Prepare the tank and clean equipment
Add substrate – arrange rocks and driftwood
Plant aquatic plants (using planting tweezers)
Fill the tank slowly to avoid disturbing the substrate
Install filter, lighting, and CO₂ system – test everything
Run lights 6–8 hours/day, CO₂ at 2–3 bubbles/sec (if used)
Cycle the tank for 1–2 weeks before adding fish
🐠 3. Tips for Maintaining a Planted Tank
Change water regularly: 30–50% weekly to keep the environment healthy.
Monitor algae: Reduce light if algae appears; use algae-eating fish/shrimp.
Avoid overstocking fish: Excess waste leads to algae and fish death.
Trim plants regularly: Maintain layout and allow light penetration.
Keep pH & temperature stable: Ideal pH 6.5–7.2, temperature 24–28°C depending on species.
📌 Popular Aquascaping Styles
Style Characteristics
Iwagumi Minimalist style using only stones and a few grass-like plants
Nature Aquarium Mimics natural landscapes with plants, driftwood, and rocks
Dutch Style Focuses on colorful plant arrangements like a garden
Biotope Replicates a natural habitat of specific fish species
