(ROUGH CUT ONLY - NO REPORTER NARRATION)

The Philippines began a massive clean-up on Thursday (August 9) as the floodwater started to recede.

Tens of thousands of people are displaced, since more than 3,000 houses were either totally destroyed or partially damaged.

Dozens of roads were still impassable.

Official said more than 2.4 million people were affected and nearly 300,000 people remained in temporary shelters.

Volunteer doctors offered free check-ups to evacuees, and medicines were distributed.

Severe floodings swept across the Philippine capital and nearby provinces, killing some 60 people and leaving seven missing.

The monsoon rains, which dumped about 390 mm (15 inches), or three times the daily average, from Tuesday to Wednesday (August 7-8), were the heaviest in three years.
