Phil Dewey - I'd Write A Song
Description
This superb record featuring vocalist Phil Dewey (né Duey), singing the chorus in an excerpt from Sigmund Romberg's musical "Melody" is performed by Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra. Recordings of this great artist are scarce; hence little is known about his career. The following information and the great photograph of the vocalist is courtesy of Mr. J. Duey. Phil Duey sang on all three networks. NBC stipulated that he sing under other spellings, or even pseudonyms, if he weren't singing with the network. He made some 5,000 broadcasts between 1928 and 1946, and was a featured singer on "The Philip Morris Show". As well, he was one of the members of the 'Revelers' before he embarked on his solo career. As stated above, it is very hard to come across quality recordings of Phil Duey's works as they were mainly studio recordings. Many of them are on broadcast transcripts used to record studio shows, and are housed at the University of Michigan Music Library. Phil Duey was a voice professor at the UofM from 1948 - 1970, and so he donated what he had to them when he retired to North Carolina in 1979. The recording presented here, was made in 1933.
