Pfc. Harold G. Barkley (G Co. 38th Inf. Regt. 2nd Infantry Division) who fought to liberate France was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French Government on 2 October 2010 in Quincy, Illinois.

His son, Cleve C. Barkley has written his father’s experience in a remarkable book entitled “In Death’s Dark Shadow, a soldier’s story”.
