Pete Burgess - Powerless

All through history, those with power have abused it.
They’re ruthless, thrashing all enemies aside in their endless crime.
Blood is spilt and drunk like wine in celebration.
People are dying, angels are crying. We’re running out of time.

Time to defeat our own desires,
Time to douse these raging fires
Of hate and lust for power.

We all have weaknesses and faults,
We lock up secrets in the vaults
Of our souls. We say one thing and mean another,
We love our enemy and despise our brother
And in the end will do anything for power.

Maybe I’m a hypocrite,
Maybe it’s I who needs to change
But I know for one that if nothing’s said
Then everything will stay the same.

We’re always making something God,
Possessions, wealth, a friend, a king.
It gives us comfort deep inside
To think that someone’s listening.
But still throughout the world there’s rampant poverty.
People are dying and women are crying about the loss
Of sons in a war that shouldn’t be fought.
The lust for power doesn’t care for human cost.

But in the end, the truth is that
Those with power are slaves.
They can’t escape the frightening fact
That they’ll take it to their graves.
