ovidd bcw - Rat

often times
I remind my cocker spaniel
he is little more than a rat
with cropped tail
and fancy hairdo
otherwise
he is a rat

though he has little care
for a single word I say
he is perfect
at arithmetic

cloudy or not
he wakes at dawn
as if he heard an alarm
to prance about
taking bows
until I respond
to the yearning in his belly
and the tick tock
timer in his head
demanding he be fed

this dog will see and count
the kernels in his bowl

and he will know
if I have not been fair

then an hour goes
he comes back
and then again
until he gets his share
he will not stop

I crawl under covers
lying there pretending
I do not see him glaring
while thinking

I am slave
to a rat
