Origins and Evolution

The roots of trick or treating can be traced back to ancient Celtic traditions, particularly the festival of Samhain. During this pagan holiday, people would wear costumes to ward off evil spirits and offer food to appease them. Over time, these customs merged with Christian observances and transformed into what we now recognize as trick or treating.

The modern concept of trick or treating gained popularity in North America during the early 20th century. Initially, it involved children going door to door performing small tricks or reciting poems in exchange for treats. As the years passed, the emphasis shifted from pranks to the more straightforward exchange of treats. Today, it has become a community-based activity where children don costumes, traverse neighborhoods, and receive candy or small gifts from homeowners.
