One dead in Peru clashes

Violence breaks out in Peru's capital Lima over plans to relocate market vendors to a new site.

One person was killed and more than 40 injured as clashes erupted after police blockaded the area where the vendors normally sell their produce.

They hurled stones and bottles at the police who responded with tear gas.

One riot police officer fell off his horse and was set upon by the protesters.

Police said they were carrying out a local council order to move the market after complaints that it was unhygienic.

But vendors accused the police of using live bullets and being unnecessarily brutal.

This woman says they had no consideration. "We are human beings and we need to be able to work," she says.

They say they don't want to move to a newly constructed market because the rents there are too high and customers would be unwilling to travel there.

Authorities say the fatality was a 32-year-old man killed by a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
