Description
EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL
(ROUGH CUT ONLY - NO REPORTER NARRATION)
One person has died and dozens left injured in clashes in the central Peruvian province of Juaja (HOW-hah) between police and protesters demanding construction of an international airport.
Activists called a 48-hour strike in the region on Wednesday (August 29) to demand that Francisco Carle Airport be modernized so that it can be used for international flights.
Protests and clashes were triggered as officials moved forward with a measure to build an international airport in the neighbouring province of Orcotuna.
Activists carried the body of a person who died during protests on Wednesday. Identified by local media as 36-year-old Alejandro Gonzalez Huaman, activists claimed the police pushed him off a bridge into the Mantar River. The public prosecutor has launched an investigation into the death.
Local officials reported at least 43 people, including three police officers, were injured and 20 people were detained.
Protesters carried a mock-coffin bearing the name of regional president Vladimir Cerron to show their anger.
