NYPD Cop Put in Headlock While Trying to Disperse Crowd

NEW YORK — A chilling video of a police officer being held in a headlock has come to light after it was tweeted by the Sergeants Benevolent Association on July 12.

Two NYPD officers who attempted to disperse a crowd on a Bronx street corner on July 1 were quickly overwhelmed when bystanders began surrounding and taunting them.

The officers struggled with the arrest of a 31-year-old man who, according to the NYPD had obstructed governmental administration. The man resisted the officers who then pushed him to the ground.

During the arrest, a 29-year-old man began interfering, one of the officers then lunged at him as the crowd cheered. The man and the officer tussled before the policeman was placed in a headlock.

After both men fall to the ground, a member of the crowd pulls the man away before fleeing.

The dazed officer then returned to support his partner in the initial arrest.

The Sergeants Benevolent Association posted the video to express their anger over a pending bill that will make it a misdemeanor offense for police officers to use any maneuver that restricts a suspect's airflow. The bill includes sitting, kneeling, or standing on a suspect's chest or back with a sentence of up to a year in jail.

In a statement, the NYPD said, 'The violence against the police officer speaks for itself. We are now in discussions with the district attorney regarding the case.'

Mayor Bill de Blasio who is expected to sign off on the bill, tweeted, 'We have a lot to do to heal the relationship between police and the community. That starts with standing together and advancing reforms, but it also means we cannot accept violence against our police officers.'
