For some performing in front of a crowd comes naturally. Not so much for vocalist and percussionist Johnny Hawkins, whose band is nominated for no less than three Grammy’s this year in the wake of their fifth album The Stories We Tell Ourselves. Hawkins suffered from stage fright early on in his life, something he needed to overcome once he was promoted from drummer to frontman for the band’s third album The Few Not Fleeting. While it was a struggle for him to begin with, the band is now playing in front of thousands a night, and Hawkins loves being on stage more than ever. “When you don’t care about what other people think, that’s complete freedom. So when I get up there I just have fun and get to be a child. If I feel an impulse I just do it, like shake my body, hit something, or scream. And other people enjoy it which is funny.”
