About the upper 1/3 of your nose is made up of the nasal bones. A fresh break in these bones can often be fixed by just pushing the bones back into position. This is called a closed reduction. If the break in the bones has healed, it may require careful re-breaking with small chisels. This is called an open reduction. If the cartilage of the nasal septum is broken or dislocated, this can cause the lower 2/3 of the nose to deviate to one side and is a common cause of significant nasal obstruction. Straightening the nose can require a reconstruction of the septum by itself or may also require straightening of the bones at the same time. Conversely, it may not be possible to straighten the bones without straightening the septum too.
