and when we should casually meet
at gatherings of potentials green to dry-rotted wood
between that denied or politely misunderstood
I see us looking at each other angled
at a table, lest we see each other's
chronic truth
feeling between two dreams and awkward
dangerously under planned
so apparent in the little we have to say
that doesn't sound contrived or superfluous

partially due to fourteen years
plus an eight year tenuous friendship bequeathed by habit
which is seen as merely time now banked
into a beach head where the tides of memory ebb
taking the finer grained particulars with them
and perhaps also due to the love,
(if that's not too naive a word) ,
that filtered through this wretchedness
a stubborn light in this heavily patented wilderness
and due, more truly due to what we shared
of orphaned starlight and silent togetherness on everything
from bicycles to ferry boats to sleeper trains
and your abiding faithfulness

all i say is thank you and apologise
in the same breath
there being no reference point
to expedite an accommodation
and clear such well worn decks

may you have happiness
as your dearest loyal friend
and should we meet again
and accidentally touch
i'll understand the irons of limitation
telling how others may never share as much
