Nobel Laureates take centre stage

Description

The Nobel Laureates took centre stage in Stockholm for prizes in medicine, chemistry, physics, economics and literature.
They received their awards in front of an audience of selected guests and the Swedish Royal Family.
First awarded was the physics team for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe.
One half of the prize went to Saul Perlmutter.
The other half jointly to Brian Schmidt
and Adam Reiss.
The Chemistry Award was given to Israeli scientist Dan Shechtman for the discovery of quasicrystals.
The Nobel prize in Medicine was awarded to Bruce Beutler, Jules Hoffman and Ralph Steinman.
Steinman died on September 30 this year, days before he could be told about the award. His wife accepted it on his behalf.
The men were awarded the prize for increasing the understanding of the immune system.
Sweden's own Tomas Transtromer took the Literature prize for his poetry.
With the global financial crisis on people's mind, the Economic's prize went to two Americans who answered the question, 'how can we measure the impact of economic policy?'.
Presenter, Professor Per Krussell elaborated further.
(SOUNDBITE) (Swedish) INSTITUTE FOR INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC STUDIES, PROFESSOR PER KRUSELL, SAYING:
"Thomas Sargent and Christopher Sims have provided powerful tools that can be used on data to answer that question. They have developed methods that let us precisely distinguish the effect of economic policy changes to other changes in the economic environment. Their work has illuminated the effects of monetary and fiscal policy not just for researchers but for bankers and finance ministers everywhere."
The laureates, received their prizes on the 115th anniversary of the death of benefactor Alfred Nobel.
