NLD confirms political return
Description
The National League for Democracy (NLD), Burma's opposition party, lead by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, has announced that they will re register as a political party following change in the country.
Crowds of people eagerly awaited the decision, which was announced after a three-hour meeting at NLD headquarters in Rangoon.
This decision will see the NLD running in future elections in the country. The party boycotted the last elections in November 2010, the first in 20 years.
After the meeting NLD spokesman Nyan Win commented on other big decisions made this week.
This week also saw the decision by the US to send Hillary Clinton to visit Burma next month. The US announcement came a day after leaders of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) agreed that Burma could chair the regional bloc in 2014.
Burma had been passed over for the position in the past due to its poor human rights record but Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said Burma had now made significant progress towards democracy.
