The ashen skin and long sleeve shirt,
The frown that gives her peace,
The broken home and crippled heart,
The longing for release.
The wavy hair, as dark as night,
The homework and the madness,
The little girl I love so much,
The eyes so full of sadness.
The shattered love and empty hope,
The sickness and the grief,
The way she’s never good enough,
The sleep without relief.
The lack of any self respect,
The heart out on her sleeve,
The friends that call her beautiful,
The truth she won’t believe.
The talks that stretch ‘til 2 am,
The worries and the fears,
The teasing from the kids at school,
The overwhelming tears.
The love that died before it’s time,
The pain that drives her blind,
The way she finds another love,
The way one’s left behind.
I cannot say I’ll ever know,
How she got through the pain,
Or how she found a shelter,
From the tears that fell like rain.
But if it really helps to calm,
The torrent from his wake,
Then my heart needs to figure out,
How hers refused to break.
