Night clashes in Alexandria
Description
ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION
Demonstrations in Egypt's second city, Alexandria, continued into the night on Friday (November 25).
A stand-off in the Mediterranean coastal city between demonstrators, mostly young men, and security forces developed as youths threw stones at a security line. The crowd then set off fireworks, some throwing them at the security personnel who wielded shields and batons.
The stand-off ended when security forces advanced up the street led by armoured vehicles and the crowd retreated.
At least one demonstrator and one member of the security services were carried away from the flashpoint with injuries. Some of the crowd could be seen hitting the injured demonstrator as he was taken past.
Demonstrators are calling for an end to military rule and a return to civilian government. They accuse the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) interim government of clinging to power since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February.
National parliamentary elections are due to start in Egypt on Monday (November 28).
