Eles ficam sem dinheiro e o jovem Nicholas (Charlie Hunnam) parte para Londres atrás do tio Ralph (Christopher Plummer), um investidor de sucesso que poderia ajudá-lo. Ralph oferece um cargo de governanta para sua irmã, Kate (Romola Garai), mas encoraja seus amigos a agirem de modo inapropriado com ela. O tio também arruma para Nicholas um emprego como assistente do diretor em um colégio, só que esse diretor e sua mulher maltratam todos a sua volta. Revoltado, Nicholas foge da escola junto com Smike (Jamie Bell), um aleijado vítima dos maus tratos do casal.
