Something Slips My Mind

The stout and stern lady
bank teller looks

Up at me and says,
“I can’t cash this check.”

Two panic attacks
and three decades pass

Then she follows up
with her next line, “Your

Driver’s license is
expired.” Ah, what a

Jolt man – an electric
shock blows through my

Nervous system as
I walk automatically

Out of the building
way too self-consciously

Thinking hard, man, about
that incident.

Was it so important?
I climb aboard

My bike not realizing
I’m still breaking

The law behind the
bars cruising back home

Minding the speed limit
oblivious

To all else pulling
into the garage

Opening the side
door and collapsing

Onto the couch … day
dreaming of more than

A developmental
blunder – it’s like

Critical, man. After
these moments with

An unquiet mind
it dawns on me that

I’ve been moving
illegally for weeks.

Now I can’t budge. I’m
stuck on just one thought:

What else have I forgot?
And how deeply

Have I been lying?
And to who? I don’t

Know what to do with
this lifetime. Do you?
