QUETTA: In an apparent reaction to the criticism that he exceeds his brief, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Tuesday reiterated he takes suo motu notices to ensure that people get their fundamental rights.

Addressing a gathering of lawyers here, he said judges are unable to dispose of cases swiftly because of so much workload, adding that he has started work on much-needed judicial reforms.

Justice Nisar said: “Our legislators don’t have time to make legislation. An outdated law has been in force in Sindh police even today.”

He reiterated that the judiciary would ensure protection of the rights of people as per country’s Constitution.

The CJP said the executive authorities are under obligation to provide fundamental rights and facilities to the people. Provision of clean drinking water, proper healthcare, and education will go a long way in helping the poor, he added.

Justice Nisar said the people of Balochistan will have to fight for their rights themselves.

The chief justice arrived in the provincial capital Quetta to hear a suo motu case pertaining to lack of basic amenities such as clean water, education and healthcare facilities.
