The Lexus TX is full of surprises, and owners can remove the front cup holders as well as slide the wireless charging tray out of the way.

Cup holders haven't changed much over the years, but every so often an automaker decides to get creative. The latest is Lexus, which introduced modular cupholders in the 2024 TX.

Although they look quite conventional at first glance, cup holders feature retractable cylinders that allow them to securely hold a wide variety of glasses and bottles. But what makes them unique is that the cup holders can be removed from the center console.

It's a relatively simple process, and once removed there's a sizeable storage compartment in the center console. Lexus said the modular cupholders support "a variety of usage styles," and we can imagine women using the storage space to keep their small purse or purse nearby.

Cupholders aren't the only oddity up front, as the TX has a retractable smartphone charger. If you want a little more space, you can push the wireless charging tray to reveal the hidden compartment at the bottom.

Turning to cupholders, models equipped with second-row captain's chairs feature a “semi-console” with two removable cupholders. The console can be easily removed from the vehicle to serve as a mobile tray for storing drinks and snacks while camping or watching youth sporting events. Simply slide the tray back when you're done; locks into place.

These are interesting but strange ideas, and we asked Lexus officials about them last week. They tell us that modular cup holders are about giving customers options, as owners can choose to have more space if desired. While the TX is the first Lexus built specifically for North America, they acknowledged that this particular idea came from Japan and said it fits the crossover's mission of providing storage and utility.
