Nasa to launch 3D printer into space in 2014

Star Trek's replicator will soon become reality as US Space Agency NASA is preparing to launch the very first 3D printer into space in 2014. The toaster-sized 3D printer will be used in zero gravity and help astronauts create spare parts and tools they need during missions.

The printer has been designed by Made in Space, a Silicon Valley startup and is still being tested on parabolic flights to make sure the printer can lay precise rows of material while combating the effects of zero gravity.

The 3D printer will have to withstand several challenges presented by space travel − from the vibrations of launch to the stresses of working in orbit, including microgravity, differing air pressures, limited power and variable temperatures.

Although having a 3D printer will reduce the need for astronauts to load up with tools, spare parts and supplies, it consumes a lot of power.

Nasa and other international space agencies are pressing forward with 3D printing, for the possibilities of producing water and food on the moon or other planets could lead to living in space.
