NASA may propose airship challenge

NASA is considering a stratospheric airship challenge that aims to build airships that can stay at high altitudes for longer durations.

The first tier of NASA’s airship design challenge requires an airship with 20 kg payload to stay at 20 km above earth for 20 hours, according to Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The second tier of the challenge requires an airship to carry 200 kg payload to stay at the same altitude for 200 hours.

An airship could be used to create high-resolution images of celestial objects or to follow weather patterns. As airships can stay in a fixed location against air currents, which gives them better downlink capabilities, according to Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
