Myanmar: Polling stations open for first elections in five years

Voters in Myanmar went to the polls on Sunday to participate in the country’s first general elections since 2020. Citizens attended polling stations from the early hours under military supervision, despite ongoing civil conflict in parts of the country. Critics argue the elections are intended to provide a façade of legitimacy to the military government, which seized power in February 2021. For many, however, this marks their first opportunity to vote, seen as a step toward peace and national reconciliation.
