Myanmar commemorates 69th Armed Forces Day

STORY: Myanmar's military marched in front of the presidential palace to mark the 69th anniversary of Armed Forces Day on Thursday (March 27).

The annual event commemorates the start of the army's resistance against the Japanese occupation in 1945.

The Commander-in-Chief General Min Aung Hlaing said the Tatmataw or Myanmar Armed Forces has played an important role in the country's history.

The 1962 coup d'état on March 2,1962 marked the beginnings of socialist rule and the political dominance of the army and on August 8 1988, mass demonstrations were held across the country that were later crushed by the army.

Myanmar has ordered Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) to halt all its work in the country, leaving tens of thousands of people without vital care, the medical aid group said earlier this month.
