Music Box Variation #8, in E, by D.Barch ©2003

Introducing Variation #7 of 9, from: A Virtual Music Box. This one, #7, is taken from an old nursery rhyme entitled "It's Raining, It's Pouring, The Old Man Is Snoring" I am sure you all remember this as a child, and singing it on the school bus on a rainy morning. The basic melody is there, with a much needed "chorus" and some bridging. There was a great deal of opportunity, in this piece, for me to write as many layers of counterpoint/melody as I could fit into it. I have always very much enjoyed the concept of counterpoint; & writing it is forever an adventure. If you listen carefully, in several parts I have attempted to give the illusions of rain drops falling; even tried to illicite the steady, back and forth of windshield wipers using repeated 5ths (usually a no no). In the entire suite I use only 3 familar folk melodies, this will be the second and the last variation, #9, uses the third example. I hope it's enjoyable! Humbly, D.Barch.
