Mursi trial begins

Dozens of supporters of deposed Egyptian president Mohamed Mursi gathered in front of the police academy in Cairo for the start of his trial.

Mursi, a member of the Mulim Brotherhood, was ousted in July of this year by the Egyptian army after massive street protests called for his removal.

He, along with 14 other defendants, are facing charges of inciting violence.

This is the second time in just over two years that a former president has been in court in Egypt.

Former leader Hosni Mubarak is also on trial after being toppled in 2011.

But lawyers for Mursi say his case is much different from Mubarak.

The difference is that Mubarak stepped down from power while Mursi is still the legitimate leader, one lawyer said.

Both defendants could face life in jail or the death penalty if found guilty.
