Mubarak verdict revives Egypt protests

It's a bitter morning in Tahrir.

Cries for a new revolution and redemption for martyrs fill the Egyptian square.

On Saturday Hosni Mubarak, the president they brought down last year, and his interior minister were sentenced to life in prison.

But the ruling brought little satisfaction as six top security officials responsible for overseeing police when hundreds of protesters died will walk free.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) EGYPTIAN, MOHAMED ABDEL LATIF, SAYING:

"People died, so other people need to be executed. (The judge) announced a very strange verdict, and I think that he himself is not satisfied with it and he's responsible for the stir up."

The former president, his sons and a business associate were also acquitted on financial charges.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DEMONSTRATOR, AHMED METWALY, SAYING:

"Who committed these crimes against the people? Who killed the revolutionaries? Did we kill them? Did we kill ourselves? Who squandered the country's resources, did we do that?"

Outcry over the verdicts is reviving street protests across the country.

And many political figures and activists are pushing for a retrial.
