In Damascus hundreds attend official funeral services held for the 55 people killed in twin bombings Thursday.

It was the deadliest attack on the capital since the uprising began last March.

The U.N. condemned the attacks, urging all parties to stop the violence and comply with a U.N.-backed peace plan.

Mourners later demonstrated outside the mosque to condemn the blasts and throw support behind President Bashar al-Assad.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SYRIAN INFORMATION MINISTER ADNAN MAHMOUD, SAYING:

"This terrorist escalation, through car bombs with tonnes of explosives that target Syrian people -- its nature and links to the state -- is a continuation of the bloody terrorist coalition between the armed groups and al-Qaeda, along with the regional and western countries that back those armed groups with weapons and money. It represents a serious violation to the Security Council's resolutions that aim to fight terrorism and to Kofi Annan's ceasefire plan. This requires him (Annan) to take tangible action towards the armed groups, and the countries that back them with money and weapons and that work in order to make his plan fail."

The UN says more than 9,000 people have been killed by security forces in the uprising. The government says 2,600 members of its security forces have died in the revolt.
