Mount Fuji granted World Heritage status
Description
Japan's Mount Fuji - one of the country's most iconic landmarks.
An active volcano, it's also a sacred site for practitioners of Shinto, Japan's national religion.
(SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) VISITOR TO MOUNT FUJI, HARUKA FUKUI, SAYING:
"To say Japan, well that's like saying Mount Fuji. For me, there is a belief that the Gods live there. Yes, indeed."
(SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) VISITOR TO MOUNT FUJI, SHIGERU FUKUI, SAYING:
"Mount Fuji - well that is Japan."
The 3,776 metre mountain - Japan's highest and the world's most climbed mountain - is granted World Heritage Status at a meeting in Cambodia on Saturday.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) CAMBODIA CHAIRMAN OF THE MEETING, MR SOK AN, SAYING:
"No objection and no more comment, I now declare the decision of 37COM8b.29 adopted."
The 37th session of the World Heritage Committee, due to run until June 27, will consider whether 32 sites - including several in conflict-torn Syria and Mali - should be listed
