Mother Orca Grieves Dead Calf

The Huffington Post reports, "A grieving orca whale has been carrying her dead newborn calf for days in a heart-wrenching scene off the coast of Victoria, British Columbia." Brad Hanson, a biologist with the Northwest Fisheries Science, told the press, "It is unbelievably sad..." Especially since when the orca was born it was alive and healthy. Unfortunately, from some unknown cause, the orca calf past away. The mother orca is now being monitored by researchers. They are afraid she may over expend energy trying to balance the baby's body on her head.
