명절 음식은 그 명절의 의미를 다시 생각하게 하고 명절의 분위기를 고취시키는 상징적인 의미도 가지고 있다. 명절 중 새해 첫날인 설날과 추석이 여러 가지 음식을 만들어 온가족이 모여 즐겨왔다. 떡국은 새해 아침에 먹는 음식으로 한국인들은 이것을 먹어야만 한살을 더 먹는다고 여겨 왔다. 설날 아침이면 남쪽지방에서는 떡국을 먹고 북쪽 지방에서는 만두국을 먹었지만 요즘은 이 두가지를 이용한 떡만두국을 즐겨먹고 있는다는 사실도 소개한다.
