Monk makes musical history

STORY: After winning over record label bosses in London, Italian monk Alessandro Brustenghi is setting out to woo music lovers around the world.

In an age of Internet sensations Friar Alessandro has good backing for his quest - he is one of the first monks in history to land a major global record deal.

His debut album "Voice From Assisi" will be released on October 15 through Decca Records/Universal.

Alessandro's journey into superstardom started when he was discovered by Mike Hedges, who was looking for 'the next Italian tenor'. The producer has previously worked with bands including U2, The Cure and Manic Street Preachers.

Addressing reporters on the sidelines of an album launch event in Assisi on Thursday (September 27), the cleric said he had little idea of what was to come when he first met with record company executives in London.

"After the first audition and that was in December, at the beginning I told Decca okay, no problem to have this CD, to record this CD, no problem, it is possible. But at the beginning I was thinking about a work with a choir, as a chorister. After I understood that it was not this and I was afraid," he said.

His debut album of modern and traditional sacred songs was recorded at London's famed Abbey Road Studios, which have hosted some of the most famous groups in music history, including the Beatles and Pink Floyd.

Not only did Friar Alessandro have to learn to use professional studio recording equipment, his visits to London were also the first time he flew on an aeroplane.

The somewhat reluctant star said he was still trying to come to grips with his new-found fame.

The everyday life of Friar Alessandro, born Alessandro Brustenghi, revolves around Assisi's famed Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where his duties include assisting the millions of visiting pilgrims.

Friar Alessandro has taken a vow of poverty and the proceedings from his album will go to the Order of Friars Minor for its charitable work.

The monk, who in his youth dreamt of becoming a drummer before discovering organ music and singing, said he has been inspired by a variety of artists and composers ranging from Michael Jackson and Bjork to Bach.

Friar Alessandro's debut will include a new version of "Pater Noster" as well as an original track by UK Royal Wedding composer Paul Mealor.
