Monitors and violence in Syria
Description
Amateur video out of Syria appears to show protesters surrounding a car carrying Arab League Monitors in Homs
The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters comes as monitors are on the ground in Syria to ensure that President Bashar-al-Assad is ending its violent crackdown on unrest.
Homs has been a hotbed of resistance to the government. Demonstrators were back on the streets Wednesday calling for change.
Footage purportedly out of Deraa shows armed men on a rooftop shooting at a passing motorcade. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says that four security forces were killed in the attack.
More footage, purportedly from Hama, shows demonstrators out in force. Arab League are due to visit the city on Thursday.
Violence erupts. Video shows demonstrators hurling stones. Rights groups say Syrian security forces used live ammunition and tear gas to disperse the crowds.
About 150 miles north of Damascus, Hama has particular resonance for Syrians. It was the site of the biggest massacre in the country's modern history -- where in 1982 ..... 30,000 people were killed after troops after Troops overran the city to put down the armed wing of the Muslim Brotherhood.
The United Nations says at least 5,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began in March.
