Monitoring the violence in Syria

Amateur video out of Syria shows UN monitors on the ground in Homs.

The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, shows footage of UN vehicles driving through rubble filled streets.

They come upon a body.

UN monitors film the body while residents take it away.

The United Nations says more than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began more than a year ago. The government says 2,600 soldiers and police have been killed in the revolt.

More footage out of Douma shows smoke rising from a factory.

UN monitors have been to Douma observing the shaky ceasefire agreed between Syrian government forces and rebels.

Monitors are trickling into Syria and officials say 30 of a planned 300-strong mission should be in place by Monday.

In Damascus Major General Robert Mood who heads the mission in Syria, called for the end to the violence.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) MAJOR GENERAL ROBERT MOOD, CHIEF OF THE U.N. MONITORS' MISSION TO SYRIA, SAYING:

"I call on all; I call on all to stop the violence and to help us on a continued cessation of armed violence."

The presence of the monitors has emboldened many thousands of protesters to resume demonstrations after weeks of military crackdown.
