Moat campsite pictures released

Police hunting for gunman Raoul Moat released pictures of the equipment he was using to hide in his woodland lair.

The pictures show a duvet, tent and sleeping bag and these were found in a secluded area on land at Wagtail Farm, on the outskirts of Rothbury, Northumberland. Moat's camping gear was recovered following the arrests of Karl Ness, 26, of Dudley, North Tyneside, and Qhuram Awan, 23, of Blyth, Northumberland.

They were later charged with conspiracy to commit murder and possessing a firearm with intent and were remanded in custody by a district judge at Newcastle Magistrates' Court.

An RAF Tornado with imaging equipment joined the manhunt after a request from Northumbria Police. The aircraft carried out a search of the area which is now complete.

Armed police stood guard outside schools in Rothbury after worried parents asked for extra security.

They will remain stationed inside the small town's three schools while they are open, at the request of locals at a packed public meeting with senior officers last night.

Temporary deputy chief constable Jim Campbell said: "We've made it very clear the safety of the public is our primary concern and if they tell us doing something will make them feel safer, then we will respond.

"However, our activity continues across the force area and we'd urge anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact us as soon as possible."
