Missing Malaysia Airlines update: plane 'may have turned back'

Authorities said on Sunday (Sunday) that the missing Malaysia Airlines aircraft had attempted to turn back from its scheduled route to Beijing before disappearing.

According to Reuters, military radar showed the missing flight MH370 may have turned back to Kuala Lumpur before disappearing.

New Straits Times reported that a Japan-bound Boeing 777 pilot, who was flying 30 minutes ahead of MH370 said he established contact with the missing flight just after 1:30 am local time but lost connection afterwards. The pilot, who asked not to be named, said there were a lot of interference during its contact with MH370. However, he did not think further for the occurrence of losing contact as it was considered normal.

There were no reports of bad weather or distress call before the plane went missing.
USA Today reported that the complete absence of reports of any problems suggests a very sudden catastrophic failure might have occurred on the plane as most planes are equipped with technology such as Aircraft Communications and Reporting System that is capable of alerting the airline if there is a fault on the aircraft.
