This tutorial shows hot to build a fully automatic sugarcane farm for minecraft 1.8 made in 14w07a.
Fully automatic means it will harvest totally on its own as soon as the chunk is loaded.
it won't create much lag but the constant harvest fill up the chests quickly so when you were caving in the area check it once in a while. The pulselengthener after the bud switch make this sugarcane farm pretty efficient so such a small build fully automated will harvest easily the same amount as some big farms you need to activate manually and you rarely visit them.
