Militants Surrender in Assam, India
6 Views • Feb 13, 2010
Description
Around 400 rebels from a militant group surrendered in India’s state of Assam on Thursday. For more than 15 years, the Karbi Longri National Liberation Front-or KLNLF—has been waging war with the Indian government for political autonomy.
They say that ending the conflict will allow the region to flourish.
[Thong Teron, General Secretary, KLNLF]: (Male, Hindi)
"I think with this, development will take place in the region alongside peace."
The KLNLF began peace talks with the government last year.
But the group warned that if the government ignored their demands, they could take up arms again.
The KLNLF has blamed the government for flooding their areas with outsiders and neglecting the welfare of the indigenous tribes.
