Joe Buck, a good-looking blond, leaves his small Texas town and heads to New York, where he hopes to be taken care of by rich women. But the severity of the city quickly brings him down to earth. Alone and penniless, he meets Ratso Rizzo, a scrawny, limping Italian man with tuberculosis. Joe feels sorry for Ratso and lets him stay in his shabby apartment. Although they are opposites, they experience the misery of the New York ghetto together and cling to the same dream of going to live in sunny Florida…
