Behind her smile
Lies the scars etched in her heart
Memories engraved in her mind
Ore the pain filled years

Behind her smile
Lies the lie of a life disguised
Fueled by hate, deprived of rights
Loss of time, blotted light
While for many years she remained
Unhappily in dismay.

Behind her smile
Hides the tears that almost forty years
Have bled like rain droplets
Against stained window panes
Yet the truth still remained
In reality her mind -
Momentarily deranged

Behind her smile
She was captive
And secretly endured pain
While she tried to restrain
What refused to refrain
From welling up those white
Now red membranes that would
be publicly a dead giveaway…
She conformed and obeyed

Behind her smile
Are the distorted veins that each bear memory
Of a life lived in agony, filled with turmoil
Living with a flawed, double identity.

Behind her smile she simulates
Poise, confidence and beauty
Glazed with grace to hide
A heart once disgraced,
Her persona permanently defaced.
For years all this
she sought to hide…
