Mi-34M1 begins flight tests with Russian VK-650V engine

The Mi-34M1 light multirole helicopter has begun its flight test campaign equipped with the Russian-made VK-650V engine, marking a new stage in the program led by Russian Helicopters, part of the state-owned Rostec corporation.

According to official information, the prototype’s first flight lasted approximately ten minutes and was carried out by test pilot Sergey Barkov from the Mil and Kamov National Helicopter Center. During the flight, engineers assessed the aircraft’s stability and maneuverability, as well as the loads on key systems during level flight and turning maneuvers.

The Mi-34M1 was designed to perform passenger transport, monitoring, flight training, and aerial sports missions. It is a light, single-engine, multirole helicopter intended to occupy a market segment that has until now been served mainly by foreign-built models.

The aircraft is powered by the VK-650V turboshaft engine, developed by United Engine Corporation through its Klimov company. According to program officials, the engine operated normally during the initial flight, demonstrating full compatibility with the helicopter’s onboard systems. The VK-650V is described as the first Russian engine intended for light helicopters with a maximum takeoff weight of up to four tonnes.
